The Good Earth, a book set in pre-revolutionary China, by Pearl S. Buck, is about a farmer named Wang Lung. Wang Lung is soon to be married and lives with his father. His father is old and he needs his soon to be-wedded bride to take care of him and his father. O-Lan, his fiance, is very useful but never does anything for herself. Together Wang Lung and O-Lan experience the ups and downs of life: bad seasons and crops, wealthy then poor, and losing some of their children.
