Cassie is nine-years old and she lives in Mississippi. The story is set in the 1930's. Throughout the book Cassie wonders why she is different from everyone else. Or why she can't be treated with respect just like the white folks. Cassie and her brother survive racism, hatred, discrimination, and bullying from both blacks and whites. But when Cassie gets the chance to go to the market with Big Ma will Cassie finally understand why she is different? Or what about when TJ's problems get way over everyone's heads? Will Cassie and her brothers save their family, friends, and their home or will everything burn to the ground? My favorite character is Uncle Hammer, he's feisty and stands up for his family.
