First off, let's meet our protagonist, Hattie Brooks. Her parents died when she was young, so she lived with most of her relatives. She lives with a relative, and when they die, she moves to the next. Hattie moves so much she is nicknamed, "Hattie Here-and-There" She lives with her horrible Aunt Ivy, until one day, she gets a letter. It's from her recently deceased Uncle Chester, leaving Hattie his homestead in Montana. Hattie jumps on the chance to get away from her Aunt, and heads west. When she gets there, she finds out she only has ten months to "prove up" on her claim. Proving up includes laying 480 rods of fencing, planting, and harvesting forty acres of her claim., and paying the small fee of $37.75. That fee is not so small when you barely have any money to begin with. Will Hattie make her deadline? Will it prove to be too much for the sixteen-year-old girl? Find out in Hattie Big Sky!
