There is an eight-year-old girl named Kahu that lives in Whangara, New Zealand. Her grandfather, Koro, is the leader of their tribe, but he is desperate for a boy to take leadership for the tribe. Throughout the story, Kahu desires Koro's love and attention. Who becomes the leader for the tribe and will Koro love his granddaughter? My favorite part of the story was when the tribe attempts to save the bull whale. Then all of a sudden, Kahu swims out into the ocean to save her tribe. She then climbs on to the bull whale and rides it back to deep oceans.

This book was: Great to read, but sometimes very sad!
