Books by Blei - Multicultural: Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata

Kira-Kira
by Cynthia Kadohata
(2005 Newbery Medal)

Recommended by: Eliot Z.
Kira-Kira is about a young girl named Katie. Katie's best friend is her sister Lynn. Lynn and Katie do everything together. Katie wants to be just like Lynn when she's older. Lynn who find everything beautiful and thinks that everything is "kira-kira" (kira-kira means glittering or shining), gets straight A's and still has time to help Katie, who doesn't get A's, with her homework. Lynn and Katie are happy, even when her parents work so much they barely get to see them, even when they get a new little brother, even when everyone stops and stares at them just because they are Japanese, but then something horrible happens. Can Katie convince her falling-apart family that there is still some "kira-kira" left in the world? I love that Cynthia Kadohata keeps your emotions up and down as you're reading. My favorite part is the amazing relationship Katie and Lynn share together.

This book was: A heartwarming coming-of-age book!
I would recommend this book to:  Anyone who likes a good book.
